Coup des Tartes for Fine, Intimate Dining in Phoenix

"Chain restaurants, theme restaurants, restaurants that are all style and little substance: Sometimes in Phoenix it seems impossible to find a genuinely homey little hole in the wall that serves good food. Don't despair; Coup des Tartes is just the ticket. With barely a dozen tables and no liquor license (bring your own wine; $8 corkage fee), it's about as removed from the standard Phoenix glitz as you can get without boarding a plane and leaving town.  Start your meal with pβtι de campagne or brie brϋlιe, covered with caramelized apples. The entree menu changes regularly, but the Moroccan lamb shank with couscous is so good that it's always available. The filet mignon, with the sauce of the moment, is another good choice. Of course, for dessert, you absolutely must have a tart." --Frommer's

"Wood-floored and cozy, this BYO (located in a cottage) is a popular choice for contemporary French and American food. Begin with salmon mousse and baked Brie covered with caramelized apples before moving on to spice-rubbed lamb shank with couscous and harissa or filet mignon with ratatouille. Everyone saves room for a tart---especially the signature banana brϋleι." --Gayot
