Almost from the time 12th Avenue
Grill opened in May of 2004, it became a local's favorite. The
food could be described as retro-American upscale diner. Kevin
Hanney, a long-time Honolulu restaurant caterer is realizing
his dream of creating "a simple neighborhood cafe-type place,
where people would really feel like they could stop in and get
something good to eat at a reasonable price." The delicious
retro desserts, prepared by award-winning dessert chef, Lisa
Siu, are a big hit as well. |

"From pan-fried trout and
signature kimchee steak, unlike anything else you've eaten on
Oahu, to the desserts crafted by award-winning dessert chef
Lisa Siu, and a superb assortment of daily specials, you'll be
glad that you made the short journey from Waikiki." |

"Best New Restaurant" - 2005 |

"Since it opened last year, 12th Avenue Grill has
been packed. While some people scratch their heads at the American
bistro’s popularity, we know what catches the crowd’s attention. Well-done
straightforward food that doesn’t bend for “local taste.” The kim chee
steak somewhere else would be drowning in the red sauce, but chef Kevin
Hanney keeps it subdued as subtle enhancement to bring out meat flavor.
The nightly
specials, where the chefs put their creativity on display, never
disappoint." |

"I
was blown completely away by the baked macaroni and cheese. No,
no, not gloppy stuff swimming in yellow cheese, but a tidy
ramekin of piping hot al-dente macaroni barely glazed by melted
house-smoked parmesan and topped with crisp buttered bread
crumbs. This dish is addictive; I dream about it at night. It
also comes with sauteed mushrooms or Black Forest ham. The
restaurant's signature dish is the kim-chee steak, with
sweet-sour cabbage and a rice cake, and rightfully so. It's a
tender piece of beef marinated in a sweet-hot mixture and
beautifully grilled. This is another one haunting my dreams. The
moan-inducing desserts are prepared by pastry chef Lisa Siu (of
3660 and Kaka'ako Kitchen fame). I indulged in the delicious
fruit crisp on both visits; satisfying desserts made from
whatever fruit is ripe each week, laced with crumbly topping." |

"Some days you just don't feel like
having another kalua pig quesadilla or fried whole moi---mainstays
of Hawaii Regional cuisine menus. Opened in May 2004, 12th
Avenue Grill is the antidote. Extra-thick, moist pork chops are
accented with demi-glace and diced cooked apples; steak is
marinated in kimchi sauce and lusciously charred. Hanney has his
own smoker and uses it to great effect on the must-have smoked
duck breast, sliced and served with an orange confiture. And to
replace that moi, trout makes an appearance in a beurre blanc
sauce. This is one of those grills where you could eat every
night." |
